Carol Ann Wilson, 77, of Topeka, KS passed away on Monday, September 17, 2018 at McCrite Plaza.
She was born June 14, 1941 in Wichita, KS the daughter of Donald and Dorothy (Goheen) Schreffler.
Carol was a member of the Central Congregational Church and was active with various community service projects, especially Doorstep.
Carol earned her Bachelors Degree from the College of Emporia and her Masters Degree in Education from Washburn University. She began her teaching career at Broadmoor Middle School in Overland Park, where she taught for two years. She then moved to Topeka where she taught for five years at Highland Park High School. Carol retired in 2003 after 28 years teaching at Topeka West High School where she was the Head of the English Department. While at Topeka West, she taught a broad range of Language Arts classes and worked with students of all skill levels. She also assisted with the school plays and the debate program and provided leadership in the district with her work in curriculum development. Carol was a talented presenter, traveling across the state to share innovative strategies in writing across the curriculum with other school districts.
Carol believed that teaching was a “calling” and inspired many students with her passion for literature and writing, and her dedication to making English come alive for all of her students.
Carol was the recipient of the Topeka Public Schools Distinguished Staff Award, given in recognition of her leadership and teaching excellence in language arts. A special honor for Carol was when she was awarded the Owen M. Henson Distinguished Educator Award at Topeka West in 2014.
She is survived by a son, Matt Wilson along with three grandsons, Brady, Alex and Payton Wilson all of Topeka. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Marilyn Schreffler.
Carol was known for her wonderful sense of humor, her sharp wit, her love of a good debate, and her desire to always help others. She also made a mean lasagna and dinner at her house was always a celebration, filled with laughter and lively discussions. Carol will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
A Celebration of Life with Sharing of Memories will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 22, 2018 at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Her family will receive friends beginning one hour prior to the service. Burial of her urn will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, September 24, 2018 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Topeka.
