Jose “Joe” M. Cuevas, 90, of Topeka, Kansas, passed away at his home August 23, 2018. Joe was born on January 12, 1928 in Topeka. Son of Emilio Cuevas and Celia Michel Cuevas.
On November 18, 1950 Joe married Esperanza “Hope” Cuevas in Topeka. Together they had three children. For most of Joe’s life he worked as a Carman for Santa Fe Railroad, where he retired in 1988. He also worked as a house painter.
Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Our Lady of Guadalupe Council, and was also an Adoration volunteer. He loved to read, work in his yard and garden, and spending time with his grandchildren and family.
He is preceded in death by his siblings, Raul Cuevas, Ignacio Cuevas, Luz Sanchez, Demetrio Cuevas, Refugia Bernhardt, and Emilio Cuevas.
Joe is survived by his wife Hope of 68 years; sons, Jaime (Linda) Cuevas of Topeka, Kansas, and Daniel (Linda) Cuevas of Grand Junction, Colorado; daughter, Gloria (Gerald) Johnson of Topeka, Kansas; sister Maxine Montes of Chicago, Illinois; and twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
Visitation will be Monday, August 27 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church from 4:00-7:00 p.m. where there will be a parish rosary/Knights of Columbus rosary at 6:00 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, August 28, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made out to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and sent in care of Brennan Mathena Funeral Home. 800 SW 6th Ave, Topeka, Kansas 66603.
