Robert E. Oswald, 83, Topeka, was born on September 24, 1934 and passed away Saturday, February 10, 2018 at Stormont Vail Hospital after a brief illness. Robert is survived by his wife of 60 years, Carol Ann (Sandbloom) Oswald; his daughter Pamela Luthi and husband Patrick, Silver Lake, KS; son Paul Oswald and wife Barbara of Alpharetta, GA; his brother Ed Oswald (Jo Ann); sister Lynette Glotzbach (Tom); three grandchildren, Elise Atkinson, Amanda Knight (Andrew), Jason Oswald and two great grandchildren, Amelia and Augustus Knight; several nieces and nephews and the rest of his family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents William and Marie (Schmidt) Oswald.
Robert enjoyed life, family and friends.
Robert was a lifelong resident of Topeka and a graduate of Hayden High School. He served in the Navy Reserves. He was a meat cutter for Mike’s IGA and retired in 1999 after 36 years of service. He enjoyed coaching grade school basketball and summer league softball programs for many years. Robert was a staple at Hayden High School basketball and football games and enjoyed supporting the Hayden Wildcats and Kansas Jayhawks.
Robert will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Thursday after 2:00 p.m. where his family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hayden High School Sports Program, sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
