Valerie Katharine (Writer) Herrick, born November 14, 1936 in Denver, Colorado, to Harold Writer and Laura Christine Rublee, went to be with her Lord on Tuesday, December 5, 2017.
Val was always an active and energetic person. She loved riding her horses in the countryside near Denver as a youth and participated in diving, ice skating, and equestrian events. After a serious accident at age 17, Val decided she wanted to commit her life to helping people. Always a caregiver, she worked as a CNA for many years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Father Michael Herrick.
She is survived by three sons; Michael (Jessica), of Grand Junction, CO, Christopher (Susan), of Topeka, KS, and Hal (Akemi), of Gambrills, MD, two sisters; Dede (Mike) Harrington and Debby (Frank) Simons, all of Arizona. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Caleb, Katie, and Ethan, as well as one great-granddaughter, McKinley.
Val was known as Matushka Val. Her focus in life was about others, not herself.
Val’s family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home with Trisagion Prayers at 6:30 p.m. Funeral service will be Friday at 10:30 a.m. at St. Peter & Paul Orthodox Christian Church, 2516 SW Huntoon. Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a contribution to St. Peter & Paul Orthodox Christian Church or American Red Cross sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66603.
