Long-time Educator, George J. Silovsky Sr. age 86, of Topeka, died on July 5th, 2016. He was born on July 29, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois the son of Josef and Aloisie (Danek) Silovsky. Mr. Silovsky was a teacher of Science at Hayden High School, from 1955 to 1992. He also served as Building Administrator, Director of Personnel, Associate Principal, Assistant Football and Track Coach, during his tenure at Hayden High School. He also was an Instructor for Highland Community College from 1990 – 1998. During the Cold War Days of the “60’s”, he was a Civil Defense Specialist for the Topeka Private Schools of Topeka. George was a veteran of the Korean Conflict as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps and a member of American Legion Post #1. He was a past member of the Topeka Officials Association for 25 years and an active member of the National Association of Biology Teachers. In 1999 he was nominated to the Kansas Teacher’s Hall of Fame. He was also a published poet with the International Library of Poetry. He married Mary Agnes (Roy) on June 16, 1956 in Ardmore, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death in 1983, as well as his parents, brothers Joseph and Gene, and sister Vlasta. Survivors include a daughter, Christine (Cameron) Collins of Beaverton, Oregon, four sons, George J. Silovsky Jr., Paul (Roxanne J.) Silovsky of Topeka, a son John (Roxanne) Silovsky of Bullard, Texas and Thomas Silovsky of Junction City, Kansas. Ten grandchildren include Jolene, Erin, Kalee, Matthew, Ian, Brianne, Megan, Ethan, Katelin, Cade and five great grandchildren Aurora, Andrew, Easton, Everlee, and Kenzee. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church. George will lie in state after 2:00 PM Friday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 PM. A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Saturday, July 9th at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will be Monday in the St. Marys Cemetery in Ardmore, Oklahoma. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Hayden High School, Christ the King Catholic Church, or The George J. Silovsky, Sr. Scholarship benefiting Hayden High School Graduates at Topeka Community Foundation sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66603.
