Max A. Baker

Max Baker, 94, of Topeka, Kansas died June 11, 2016 at Brewster Place.

He was born in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on January 2, 1922, the son of Roy B. and Freda (Wohlbruck) Baker.

Max was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps serving in World War II.  He was a Pearl Harbor/Hickam Field survivor. He served 52 consecutive months with the 31st Bomb Squadron (H) in the Pacific Theatre.

He was an active member of the Philip Billard Post #1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars where he participated in numerous military graveside services.  He was also a member of American Legion Capitol Post #1.

Max was a graduate of Washburn University.  He worked as an Architect, Civil Engineer and Land Surveyor and was a self-employed Accountant prior to his retirement.

He enjoyed reading, flower and vegetable gardening, animals and will be remembered as a jokester.

On May 31, 1947 he married Margaret Pashman who preceded him in death in 2004.  He married Naomi Gibeson on November 4, 2005 and she survived him.  He is also survived by a daughter, Judi Groves (Mike), his grandchildren; Lori Turec (Paul) and their children Max Woodard and Jack Turec, Jeb Wright (Patty) and their children, Cassidy Wright-Long (Nathan) and Miles Crabtree, Ashley Friend (Nathan), and Chris Groves, two brothers, Bill Baker (Louise) and David Baker (Janet) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.  He was preceded in death by a brother Jim, a sister Mickey and a grandson Brian Groves.

Max will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 25, 2016.  Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m.  Interment will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery where military honors will be provided by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Philip Billard Post #1650 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars or American Legion Capitol Post #1, and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 S.W. 6th Avenue, Topeka, Kansas 66603.
