Maria de Jesus Regina “Marie” Granado, died May 13, 2016 in Burtonsville, MD. She was born on September 3, 1911, at Silao GTO Mexico, the daughter of Longino and Juana (Perez) Mendoza. Marie was a Certified Nursing Assistant. She took practical nursing in 1929 with the Spanish Sisters, Servants of Mary of Kansas City, KS. She worked under them for eight years. She spent some time in San Luis Potosi nursing among the poor and the dying until the persecution of the church got so bad the sisters had to abandon Mexico and return to Kansas City to the motherhouse. Marie was transferred to the Bronx, NY where she helped the sisters take care of the sick, especially the elderly, and begging from door to door for food and money to assist the sisters. She returned to Topeka in 1937 to be with her parents. Marie worked for both St. Francis and Stormont-Vail Hospitals until she retired. After her retirement, she worked an additional 11 years for Hill Haven. Marie married Antonio Granado in 1942. They had three children together. Survivors include one daughter, Rita Granado, of Maryland, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Antonio, daughter, Sandra Granado, son, Fernando Granado, 2 sisters, Jennie Lopez, Guadalupe Terry, 4 brothers, Trinidad, Victoriano, Jose Pedro, Faustino Mendoza and a grandson, Christopher. Marie was a life time member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Altar Society and the first Mexican Fiesta queen of the parish in 1939. Marie will lie in state after 4:00 PM Monday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 PM. The family will greet friends from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 AM Tuesday at the Church. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Avenue Topeka, Kansas 66603.
