Raymond J. Ziegler, 91, of Topeka, died March 9, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Flush, Kansas, on February 8, 1925, the son of Peter and Mary Ann (Klug) Ziegler.
Ray served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1946, serving as a medic in a M.A.S.H. unit. After returning to Topeka, he worked for Dibble Grocery Stores for over 40 years, starting in the produce department and retiring as a manager.
Ray volunteered many years for Meals on Wheels and Let’s Help Inc.
He enjoyed flower gardening, playing horseshoes, feeding the birds, and was known to experiment in the kitchen with new recipes. Ray also enjoyed watching KU Basketball but above all his family was most important to him.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Mary Lou Artzer at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on June 3, 1947. She survives.
Also surviving are his children: Greg (Cathy) Ziegler of Topeka, Marilyn (Doug) Tucker of Omaha, Nebraska, Jerry (Stacey) Ziegler of Topeka, Kenny (Alice) Ziegler of Topeka, and Carolyn (Todd) Beurman of Evansville, Indiana, a brother, Julian Ziegler of Topeka, a sister, LaVon Ziegler of Wichita, 18 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Jeanette Marie Ziegler, five brothers, Albert, Peter, Leo, Francis, and Kenneth “Jack”, and three sisters, Mary Ringleman, Lena Ziegler, and Ramona Andersen, and two great grandsons.
A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church followed by visitation until 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Cremation will follow and inurnment will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date.
