Daniel J. Hales, 63, of Topeka, died January 13, 2016 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 11, 1952 the son of Eugene M. and Evelyn Y. (Yocum) Hales. Daniel attended Hayden High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served during the Vietnam era from 1972 to 1975 and was awarded the Army Commendation Medal. He was a life member of the DAV and a member of the American Legion. He worked for the State of Kansas as a Patrol Sgt. and as a Security Agent with the 190th SFP SFS Wing from 1988 to 2004. Daniel enjoyed the YMCA, traveling and animals. He was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and was a Native American. He married Julene C. (Frost) Mallory in Topeka, Kansas on June 22, 2001. She survives. He is also survived by a daughter Christina M. (Ryan) Atchison of Burlingame, a son, Matthew G. Hales of Topeka and his grandchildren, Roslyn and Johnny Atchison, a sister, Barbara, his step children, Paul Mallory II of Carbondale, Samantha Mallory of Kansas City, Ks., and Paula (Jim) Dorries of Edwardsville, Ks., and a step grandson, Mason Adams. Daniel will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Saturday where the family will receive friends from 10:00 until 12:00 noon followed by a Prayer Service at 12:00 noon. Military graveside services will be conducted at Penwell-Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery by the American Legion Post #421 at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, January 18th. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to Midland Hospice Care or the Helping Hands Humane Society and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
