Joe A. “Cano” Martinez, 90, of Topeka, KS died Monday, December 28, 2015 surrounded by family at his home.
He was born September 4, 1925 in Topeka, the son of John and Angelina (Aguirrie) Martinez.
Joe was a 1943 graduate of Topeka High School. He served in the US Army 279th Combat Engineers during WW II. Joe worked for A.T. & S.F. Railway Company where he had been a Carman Welder, he retired in 1985. He also worked at Stormont-Vail Hospital in the Emergency Room as a Nursing Technician. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the American Legion.
Joe married Patricia Terrones on October 9, 1948 in Newton, KS. She preceded him in death on August 12, 2011. Survivors include two daughters, Linda (Steve) Henning, Irene (Kenneth) Lambotte all of Topeka, and a son, Andrew Martinez of Lawrence. Two sisters, Cecelia Alcala, Amelia Ramirez, six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by three siblings, John, Jr., Chona, and Lydia.
He will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 P.M. until 6:00 P.M. A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 P.M. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Thursday at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Christ the King Catholic Church sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66603.
