Marilyn Lucille Shaffer, 84, Topeka, died Friday, August 28, 2015 at a Topeka hospital where she was readmitted August 20. She also was hospitalized in late February, 2015. She had pneumonia. She lived at Topeka Presbyterian Manor since January 2009. Earlier she lived at Homestead of Topeka since February 2004. She was born on April 29, 1931 in May, Oklahoma, the eighth of nine children, to Thomas H. and Mable E. (Robertson) Fleming. She moved from Oklahoma to Missouri in 1939 and graduated from Nevada, Missouri High School in 1949. Marilyn was employed by the Missouri Department of Social Welfare. She attended Bethel Baptist Church in north Topeka. She married Albert Clifton Shaffer on February 3, 1951 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. They moved to Topeka in 1956 and lived many years near 50th and Indian Creek Road in the Seaman district. Marliyn and Albert enjoyed tending to their orchard and vegetable garden. She spent many summer hours canning fruits and vegetables. They moved into the city in 2003. He preceded her in death on June 8, 2015. They made three trips to Washington D.C. where they toured the White House, all the monuments, and nearby Arlington National Cemetery and the homes of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. Surviving are four sons, Stanley Shaffer, Dennis Shaffer, Alan Shaffer, and Philip Shaffer, her three daughters-in-law, Sandy Shaffer, Pamela Shaffer, and Linda Shaffer, all in Topeka; a brother, Ralph Fleming of Accokeek, Maryland; a granddaughter, four grandsons, twin great-granddaughters, a great-grandson, and another great-granddaughter. Also preceding Marilyn in death was a son Michael R. Shaffer on June 19, 2014. Services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Burial will be in Penwell Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery, 6th and Gage. She will lie in state at the funeral home on Wednesday after 2:00 P.M. where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M.
