John Alonzo, 90, of Topeka, died August 18, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Topeka, Kansas on September 19, 1924 the son of Balentine and Tomasa (Hernandez) Alonzo. John served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Iwo Jima and Okinawa, Japan. He was a Shop Supervisor for the Atchison Topeka and Santa Fe Railway Company for over 25 years prior to his retirement in 1986. John enjoyed gardening and was an avid K-State and Royals fan. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the American Legion Capitol Post #1. John married Mary Rodriguez at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church on June 24, 1961. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Thomas (Vicki) Alonzo, a daughter, Annette Alonzo, a sister, Josephine Cuevas, a brother, Julian (Rosemary) Alonzo all of Topeka, two grandsons, John (Jaclyn) Alonzo, and Stephen Alonzo, and a great grandchild on the way. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Martin and Jesse Alonzo, and two sisters, Cruz Carreon and Lupe Martinez. John will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Sunday where the family will receive friends from 3:00 until 7:00 p.m. A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 P.M. Please wear Royal's apparel for the visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
