Virginia Marie Burghart

Virginia Marie Burghart, 94, of Topeka, died Sunday, August 9, 2015 at St. Francis Hospital. She was born in Topeka, Kansas on March 22, 1921 the daughter of Michael and Matilda (Gibler) Urban. Virginia was a member of St. Joseph/Sacred Heart Parish and the Altar Society at the church. She was a devoted wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an avid gardener and spent countless hours in the garden at her home where she resided for nearly 70 years. On several occasions, Mr. & Mrs. Burghart were recognized by the Topeka Beautification Committee for their patio garden. She married Godfrey A. Burghart Sr. at Sacred Heart Parish in Topeka on August 22, 1939. Her husband of 55 years, preceded her in death on July 16, 1994. She is survived by seven children, Judith (Marion) Savoie, Godfrey A. Burghart Jr., Joan (Maurice) Smith, Stephen (Linda) Burghart, Mark (Becky) Burghart all of Topeka, Gregory (Nancy) Burghart of Tecumseh, and Angela (Dave) Bolz of Emporia, a sister Martha Devlin of Topeka, 16 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and another great grandson arriving in October. She was also predeceased by a brother Michael "Charlie" Urban. Virginia will lie in state on Wednesday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 227 SW Van Buren. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
