Albert Clifton Shaffer, 87, Topeka, died Monday, June 8, 2015 at the House at Midland Care where he was transferred June 2nd from a Topeka Hospital. He entered the hospital May 25th with pneumonia. He lived at the Presbyterian Manor since 2008. He was born July 25, 1927, at Nevada, MO to William Henry and Ethel Lee (Hatton) Shaffer, and spent his early life in Nevada, MO where he attended schools. He enlisted in the Navy in 1945. His Navy career took him to foreign countries including Portugal, Spain, France, Greece, Turkey, Italy and Algeria as well as Japan after he re-enlisted in the Navy. After he was discharged, he was a meat cutter and worked for Stoffle Meat Co., and Lockard's HyKlass Grocery. He began work at the Topeka Goodyear Tire and Rubber plant in 1959. He retired in 1989. He was a member of Local # 307 of United Steel Workers and North Post #400 of the American Legion. He closely followed the St. Louis Cardinals' baseball and Big 12 Conference sports. He was a particular fan of the Missouri Tigers football and basketball. He married Marilyn Lucille Fleming on February 3, 1951 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. They moved to Topeka in 1956 and lived many years near 50th and Indian Creek Road in the Seaman district. They moved into the city in 2003. She survives at the Presbyterian Manor. They made three trips to Washington DC where they toured the White House, all the monuments, and nearby Arlington National Cemetery and the homes of George Washington and Thomas Jefferson; as well as Fort McHenry of the War of 1812 fame. The Shaffer's had five sons, Stanley, Dennis, Michael, Alan and Philip, all in Topeka and three daughters-in-law, Sandy, Pamela and Linda. Five grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by six sisters and two brothers. Services will be at 11:30 A.M. on Friday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. Burial will be in Penwell Gabel Memorial Park Cemetery, 6th and Gage. He will lie in state at the funeral home on Thursday after 2:00 P.M. where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M.
