Hubert Joseph Schiffelbein, 89, of Topeka, died May 14, 2015 at the House at Midland Care surrounded by his family. He was born on August 30, 1925 in Ness City, Kansas the son of John and Katherine (Braun) Schiffelbein. Hubert was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. Hubert retired as a hospital surgical technician at the Topeka VA Hospital. After his retirement he worked as an attendant for the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, bowling, playing cards and family celebrations. He volunteered to serve luncheon meals to the poor and homeless at Let's Help. Hubert was a member of Sacred Heart/St. Joseph Parish, was a communion minister at the church, and a life member of the Knights of Columbus. Hubert married Agnes Mildred Puhl on January 18, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Topeka, Ks. She survives of the home. He is also survived by a daughter, Nancy McMillen, three sons, Stephen (Teresa), Edward (Lora) and Donald (Donna) Schiffelbein, 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, his brothers, Cyril (Red), Raymond (Whitey) and Richard (Dick) Schiffelbein, and sisters, Elviera (Vera) Miller, Marie Dawson, Julianna Bayer and Agnes Weigel. He was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Schiffelbein on July 2, 1990, his parents and seven siblings. Hubert will lie in state at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Sunday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be concelebrated by his grandson, Fr. Matthew Schiffelbein and Fr. Tim Haberkorn on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 312 Freeman Ave. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery with military honors.
