Josephine Gibbs, 95, formerly of Topeka, died April 26, 2015 at The House at Midland Care. She was born on a farm near Antonino, Kansas on December 18, 1919 the daughter of Joseph and Margaret (Miller) Urban. Josephine was a homemaker. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Scranton and was previously a member of the Altar Society at Sacred Heart. She enjoyed bowling, cooking meals especially with her homemade breads and noodles, flower gardening, and was one of the few who still made her own lye soap. Josephine married Forrest Gibbs at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Topeka on June 2, 1956. He preceded her in death on March 22, 2003. Survivors include her children, Debra (William) Hortenstine of Carbondale, and Mark (Carol) Gibbs of Topeka, a sister, Esther Ryan of Santa Rosa, California, her grandchildren: Jennifer Fenton, Rebecca Walshire, William Hortenstine II, Nathan Gibbs, and Jason Gibbs, 5 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. Josephine was preceded in death by her siblings, Jacob Urban, Frank Urban, Robert Urban, Rose Walters, Bertha Pfannenstiel, and Ida Swindell. Josephine will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Friday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will greet friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Scranton. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Topeka at 12:00 noon.
