Alfred S. Gomez, 82, of Topeka, died March 19, 2015 at his home surrounded by his family. He was born in Topeka, Kansas on April 22, 1932 the son of Alfonso and Luz (Sanchez) Gomez. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was retired after 32 years from the VA Hospital. Alfred loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also liked watching KU basketball and K.C. Chiefs football. He was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. He married Virginia Orozco on May 18, 1957, and later married Diane Phillips on April 11, 1979. They both preceded him in death. A son, Anthony Gomez also predeceased him on November 24, 1992. He was also preceded in death by five brothers; Ralph, DeSale, John, Silvino and Alfonso. He is survived by his children, Gina (Carlos) Altamirano of Topeka, Michael Gomez of Topeka, Chris Gomez of Wichita, KS, Lisa (Patrick) Barnes of Berryton and Jason Gomez of Topeka, eleven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, four sisters, Lucy Ramirez, Ernestine Sandate, Rachel Griego and Mary Benaka, and three brothers, Raul, Rudy and William Gomez, and his companion, Evelyn Davin. Alfred will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. on Monday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
