Anna E. "Ann" Barnard, 88, of Topeka, died January 17th. She was born in Perry, Kansas on January 2, 1927 the daughter of James and Pauline (Hujing) Hackett. She worked at Southwestern Bell as a supervisor for 11 years and then for USD #501 for 34 years prior to her retirement. She also assisted her husband in running the family business. Ann taught CCD at St. Matthew Catholic Church of which she was a member since 1957. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, gardening, animals and spending time with her family. Ann married Merle E. Barnard at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Perry on May 28, 1954. He preceded her in death on December 29, 1999. She is survived by a son Michael E. (Kathleen) Barnard of Tecumseh, two daughters, Rita K. Barnard and Barbara J. Barnard (Charles Waetzig) both of Topeka, her siblings, James (Rosemary) Hackett, Charles (Vera) Hackett, John Hackett and Kathleen Hackett, as well as many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was predeceased by a sister-in-law, Carole Hackett. Ann will lie in state at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Tuesday where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Interment will follow in St. Theresa's Catholic Cemetery in Perry, Kansas.
