Mildred Pinkston

Mildred Startup Pinkston Mildred Startup Pinkston was born July 1, 1913 on a farm near Silver Lake, KS. She was preceded in death by father Halle P. Startup, mother Mary Anderson Startup, sister Clara J. Bowers, and husband Glenn E. Pinkston. Mildred attended a one room rural school through eighth grade. She graduated from high school in Silver Lake where she played girls basketball: was an officer in the girl's reserves; participated in school plays and was a 4-H member for 4 years. She won the Style Revue at the county, state, and national levels in 4-H s National Sewing Competition: besting 110 delegates from 41 states. She was named Grand Champion at Chicago in 1932 with a winning project of a tailored wool dress. Mildred was awarded a scholarship to Kansas State College but for practical reasons opted to work her way through Business College in Topeka. After working for the state of Kansas, she learned the Borroughs Bookkeeping s machine and joined the Topeka Building and Loan Association. Mildred met her husband Glenn while working for the state. They were married New Year s Eve 1939 and moved to Chicago, ILL where Glenn was a U.S. Internal Revenue agent. Glenn William was born Nov. 10th, 1942. They later moved to Shreveport, LA, Kansas City, MO and finally settled in Topeka. Philip, their second son was born March 9th, 1951. Her husband Glenn passed away in 1970 and Mildred went to work for Prudential Investments and retired at the age of 77. She moved to Plano, TX in 1999 to be closer to her family. Survivors include both sons: Glenn and wife Linda of Richardson, TX and Philip of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by three grandsons, one granddaughter, 7 great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter. A memorial service will be held at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home in Topeka, KS on Saturday, December 13 at 1:30pm.
