Alfonso S. "Fonsi" Gomez, Jr. 89, of Topeka, died September 26, 2014, at the Community Living Center at Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center. He was born on April 7, 1925 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Alfonso, Sr. and Luz (Sanchez) Gomez. Alfonso graduated from Topeka High School then earned a Business Degree from Clark School of Business. He was a Seaman First Class in the United States Navy during World War II. Alfonso worked at Supply Depot and retired from AT & SF Railway Company where he had been a Carman. In his spare time he assisted many with filing their income taxes and was a local musician. Alfonso had a great love for music and following the K.C. Royals and KU Basketball but his greatest love of all was spending time with his grandchildren and family. He married Esperanza "Daisy" Rios Padilla. She preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by their daughter, Sandra Gomez on October 16, 1987. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Grose and her husband Steven, Zina Ball and her husband Joseph, all of Hoyt, three sons, Gary Gomez and his wife Judy, of Overland Park, Patrick Gomez and his wife, Shelly, of Topeka, Randy Gomez and his wife Andrea, of Liberty, MO. Eight grandchildren, Sheri Swenson, Janelle Rethman, Matthew Ball, Valerie Ball, Alicia Gomez, Jessica Juarez, Christian Gomez, Madison Gomez, a great-granddaughter, Kyera Juarez and 8 Siblings also survive. Alfonso will lie in state after 2:00 P.M. Monday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment with military honors will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
