Ascension Reyes Gutierrez

Ascension "Chonita" Reyes Gutierrez, age 90, of Topeka, died September 18, 2014 at the Life Care Center of Colorado Springs in Colorado. She was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 29, 1924 the daughter of Defino and Julia (Mendez) Reyes. Chonita was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, the Altar Society at the church, Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle #503 and LULAC. She retired as a clerk with the Shawnee County Courthouse. She married Genaro "Hank" Gutierrez in Palm Springs, California on March 5, 1944. He preceded her in death on February 27, 1996. She is survived by two sons, Alfred (Pat) Gutierrez of Topeka, David Gutierrez of Honolulu, Hawaii, a daughter Theresa (Ron) Lieser of Colorado Springs, Co., and five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son Genaro Gutierrez Jr. and her siblings, Soledad "Sally" Monreal, Manuel M. Reyes, and Loretta Salinas. Ascension will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. where a Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle #503 rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. and a Parish rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
