LLOYD S. PURCELL, JR., 95, died peacefully September 8, 2014, having lived a long and good life. He is survived by his loving wife and constant companion of 68 years, Margery M. Purcell. Born on September 3, 1919, in Leavenworth, KS, he was the son of Lloyd S. Purcell, Sr. and Lila Eva Goodman Purcell, and they preceded him in death. He grew up in Lawrence, KS, and graduated from Lawrence High School in 1937. A 1941 graduate of Kansas University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business, Lloyd was a member of Sigma Nu social fraternity and a life member of the KU Alumni Association. Lloyd served his country in WWII, stationed in England and working with the weather service, providing crucial information for battle strategy and the safety of air and ground troops. He was honorably discharged in 1945 from the Headquarters Squadron 20th Bombardment Wing of the United States Army. After returning from active military service, Lloyd was introduced to Margery through a mutual friend and they married on December 31, 1945. He began a long career with Southwestern Bell in Topeka and retired in 1978 after more than 32 years of service. Lloyd and Margery have often said their retirement years were the happiest of their lives. They traveled extensively both near and far, attended lectures, and were active members of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka. Lloyd was also a life member of the Sunflower Chapter of Telephone Pioneers; a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 534; the American Legion Capitol Post No. 1 and Voiture No. 1148 of 40 & 8, all of Topeka. Also preceding him in death were his sister, Elizabeth Brock, nephews David Stone and Greg Booker, and niece Sylvia Stone. He is also survived by nephews Bob Stone, Darrell Brock and Milton Brock, nieces Laura Tiffany, Melanie Nolker, Ginny Booker, Joyce Daughaday, Judy Hoye, and many great nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly. A private service will be held with inurnment at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Topeka.
