Jack D. Holmberg

Jack D. Holmberg, 92, of Topeka, died August 15, 2014 at the Topeka Presbyterian Manor. He was born in Strong City, Kansas on February 6, 1922 the son of Carroll F. and Estella (Schmitt) Holmberg. He was a 1940 graduate of the Strong Township Rural High School and attended Emporia State University. Jack served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He retired on July 30, 1983 as the Santa Fe Eastern Lines Vice-General Chairman for the Brotherhood of Railway and Airline Clerks after 42 years of service. He was a life member of Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW, American Legion Post #2 in Newton, Knights of Columbus Council #13012 and the James W. Gibbons Assembly of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He served as a trustee for 15 years of the EBA Board, was a member of TCU #427, the Santa Fe Old Timers and the National Association of Retired Railway Employees. Jack married Ruth Marie Stubenhofer at St. Anthony's Church in Strong City, Kansas on February 12, 1946. She survives. He is also survived by a son, Mark D. Holmberg of Kissimmee, Florida, a daughter, Karla A. Satterlee of Holyoke, Colorado, two sisters, Beverly Grochowsky of Newton, Kansas and Shirley Oldham of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, a grandson and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Connie Roberts. Jack will lie in state after 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Matthew Catholic Church where the family will greet friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. A Knights of Columbus Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Chalice Ceremony conducted by the James W. Gibbons Assembly of the 4th Degree K. of C. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery where military honors will be conducted by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Matthew Catholic Church or Midland Care Hospice and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
