John A. Oppermann, 87, of Topeka, died October 21, 2012 at his home. He was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 29, 1925 the son of Arthur T. and Mary O?Byrne Oppermann. John joined the U.S. Marine Corps and served during World War II. He retired from both the U.S. Postal Service and the State of Kansas, Department of Revenue. He had also worked for Morrells. John was a member of Mater Dei Holy Name Catholic Church. He married Helen Rigby in Topeka, Kansas on June 16, 1951. She predeceased him on June 16, 2008. He is survived by his son, John Kevin Oppermann of the home, a great niece, Devon (Courtney) Luthy of Austin, Texas, and a great nephew Blake Courtney of Lawrence. John was preceded in death by his sister Mary Smith. John will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Thursday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. followed by a Parish Rosary at 6:30 p.m. Graveside Services will be held on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
