George W. Breece, 94, passed away Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Brewster Place. He was born June 10, 1918 in Bergman, Arkansas the son of John L. and Nancy M. (Miller)Breece. George was a 30 year veteran of the U.S. Army beginning his career in the Cavalry at Fort Riley; he fought in the Pacific during WW II and in Korea. He retired with the rank of Sergeant Major while training troops at Fort Polk, Louisiana. During his career he was stationed in Germany as well as the central United States. After his retirement from the military he worked at Tastee Bakery, Colmery-O?Neil Veterans Medical Center and Forbes Air Force Base. Retiring once again he became a familiar figure in Auburn, KS, where he lived for 38 years. While in Auburn he was active with the Lions Club and enjoyed training and driving his beloved horses. He was also a member of the American Legion in Topeka. He married Alberta M. Hurd on August 12, 1954 in Topeka. She Survives. Other survivors include his two daughters, Amy Breece of Lawrence and Tanna Breece of Forest Hill, LA. Two sisters, Kathryn Awbrey of Palm Dale, CA and Helen Sloan of Harrison, AR also survive. He was preceded in death by his son, John H. Breece along with two brothers, Vaughn and Wayne Breece and a sister, Luany Kelley. Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Topeka Cemetery with full military honors provided by the U.S. Army, Ft. Riley Casualty Funeral Detail.
