Winifred "Winnie" Walstrom

Winifred (Winnie) Josephine Walstrom, 95, of Topeka died on April 12, 2013. Winnie was born in Odessa, MO. on March 29, 1918, the daughter of Eugene and Caroline Beying. At the age of two, Winnie?s family moved to a farm in Winchester, Ks. where she grew up and graduated from high school. On May 4, 1940, Winnie married the love of her life, Raymond (Ray) Walstrom, at Assumption Church in Topeka. In 1942, Ray went to Honolulu, HI. Winnie joined Ray in 1943, where they both worked for the Naval Department at Pearl Harbor. In 1945, they relocated to San Francisco, CA, returning to Topeka in 1946. Winnie worked for Perfect Plumbing and later KPL, where she retired from in 1977. She was a founding member of St. Matthew?s Catholic Church and was active in the St. Teresa?s Guild and the Altar Society. After moving to Atria Hearthstone in Topeka, Winnie joined Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Winnie and Ray enjoyed many years of retirement together that included extensive travel of North America, Hawaii and Mexico. From 1998, Winnie lived at Atria Hearthstone. Her family wishes to extend a special thank you to the entire staff at Atria Hearthstone for making Winnie?s last years enjoyable and comfortable. Winnie was preceded in death by parents, her husband of 58 years, her son Gregory R. Walstom and her sister Alvena Hollandsworth. Left behind to mourn her death, yet celebrate her life are her children: Beverly (David) Lewis; Bradley (Diane) Walstrom; grandchildren: Kathy (Randy) Crome; Barbara (Kelly) Allen; Jason Walstrom; and Brinton (Paige) Walstrom; stepgrandson: Daniel Lewis; great grandchildren: Allie; Joe; Irie and Max. Winnie will lie in state from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. A Parish Rosary prayed at 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in Winnie?s memory to Midland Hospice Care sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Avenue, Topeka, KS 66603.
