Mary Margaret McDermed

Mary Margaret McDermed, 91, of Topeka, KS, died Friday, March 15, 2013 at Midland Hospice Care. She was born May 13, 1921 in Wichita, KS the daughter of Edward and Velma (Lesco) Hurst. Mary was a U.S. Navy Veteran of WW II. She was a secretary at the Colmery O?Neil Veterans Administration Hospital retiring in 1983. Mary has lived in Topeka since 1968 coming from Wichita, KS. She was a member of Mater Dei Assumption Catholic Church for over 40 years and has been a member of Christ the King Catholic Church since 2003. She was a member of Daughters of Isabella Little Flower Circle #503 and volunteered at St. Francis Hospital where she was a member of the St. Francis Hospital Auxiliary. She married Paul C. McDermed on October 29, 1960 in Wichita. He preceded her in death on July 9, 2012. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Gwen Drews in November of 2009 and a sister, Dorothy Dorow in 2000. She is survived by a daughter, Judi Coogan of Houston, TX, a brother, John Hurst of Wichita, KS. Three grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. Mary will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where a Daughters of Isabella Rosary will be prayed at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the V.F.W.
