June R. Myers, 94, of Topeka, died December 31, 2011 at Midland Hospice House. She was born in Ingomar, Montana on June 6, 1917 the daughter of Amie Guy and Victoria Cecilia (Kubitza) Ruby. June was a graduate of Washington High School and received her Nurses Training from Providence Nursing School both in Kansas City, Kansas. She was a veteran of the US Army serving in the Nurses Corp during World War II where she was a Second Lieutenant. She retired in 1977 from the Colmery-O?Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka where she was a Nurse. June was a member of Mater Dei Assumption Catholic Church, Apple Valley Camping Association, Kansas Quilter?s Association in Topeka and Lawrence, and was a charter member of the Topeka Needle Work Guild. She enjoyed fishing, camping, and all kinds of needle work. She married Peter Myers in Kodiak, Alaska on September 18, 1943. He preceded her in death on February 26, 1993. She was also predeceased by her parents, a sister, Virginia Shaffer, a brother, John Ruby, and two sons-in-law, Kenneth Vande Velde and Rick Smith. June is survived by a son, Dr. Stephen Myers and his wife Ruth of Burnsville, MN, two daughters, Vicki Vande Velde of St. Mary?s, KS, and Leah Smith of Westmoreland, KS. She is also survived by her grandchildren; Amy (Michael) Lett, Guy Higbee, Kimberly (Roger Gowen) Vande Velde, Mandy (Calvin) Masters, Jessica Mitchell, Michael (Tina) Vande Velde and ten great grandchildren. June will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Tuesday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10:00 a.m. at Mater Dei Assumption Catholic Church. Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at St. Columbia Catholic Cemetery in Gardner, Kansas with military honors provided.
