Charles F. Holmes

Charles F. "Charlie" Holmes, 89, of Topeka, died April 17, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital. He was born in Dover, Kansas on October 6, 1922 the son of Clyde W. and Jennie (Ginter) Holmes Sr. Charlie was a veteran of the US Army having served in World War II stationed in Alaska. He owned and operated Charles Holmes Heavy Equipment until his retirement. They specialized in soil conservation, and road and highway work. Charlie was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church where he served as an usher and was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council at the church. He enjoyed working in his yard and especially loved feeding the birds. He married Dorothy M. Yustick at Holy Name Church on November 20, 1948. She survives. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Kelsey (Stephen) Newton of Indianapolis, IN, Garrett Holmes and Scott Holmes of Moraga, California, a great grandson, Grady Newton, three brothers, Robert, Calvin and David Holmes, a sister, Ella Ann Reinheimer, and several nieces and nephews. Charlie was preceded in death by a son, Ronald C. "Ron" Holmes on December 6, 2010, one brother, Clyde and a sister, Luella Bisel. Charlie will lie in state at Christ the King Catholic Church on Thursday after 4:00 p.m. where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church. Cremation will follow with inurnment in the Holy Family Columbarium at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
