Aloysius L. Nemec, known as "Ollie" or "Al" by his family and friends, 85, of Topeka, died March 3, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital. Ollie was born on January 20, 1927 in Hanover, KS, the son of Joseph and Mary Emilia (Koehler) Nemec. He served in the United States Army from 1951, being honorably discharged in 1953. He graduated from Washburn University with a Bachelors of Science Degree in Business Administration. Al was employed by the State of Kansas in Business Management and Personnel from 1957, until his retirement in 1991 as the Commissioner of Mental Health and Retardation. He was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #534, The American Legion Post #1 and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed spending time with family, playing and watching baseball, hunting, fishing, golf, traveling, playing cards, going to the casino, and watching various other sports. Al was an avid K-State fan. Al married Anna Taphorn on May 9, 1959 at St. Gregorys Catholic Church in Marysville, KS. She survives. Al is also survived by a son, Tony Nemec of Overland Park, KS; two daughters, Barbara Dominguez (Mark) of Topeka and Beth Grimes (Kelly) of Ft. Worth, TX; grandchildren, Cori, Kelly, Anthony, Madison, Emily and Nikki, a brother, Frank Nemec (Pat) of Tucson, AZ and former daughter-in-law, Deb Nemec. Al is also survived by his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Hildegard and Jerry Pearl, Thelma and Ed Haefner, Elsie Lampe, Eddie and Nadine Taphorn, Francis and Sheila Taphorn, Robert and Stevie Taphorn, Jimmy and Karen Taphorn, and many nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Mary (Koehler) Nemec and his brothers, Joe, John and Ed. Al will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. on Monday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 8:00 p.m. Al will lie in state after 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Christ the King Catholic Church, where the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
