Alyce Smith

Alyce Smith, 98, of Topeka, died July 22, 2011 at Aldersgate Assisted Living. She was born in Corning, Kansas on August 1, 1912 the daughter of Samuel and Myrtle (Dennis) Berridge. After graduation from high school she attended business college. Alyce owned and operated Smith House Antique Store until her retirement. She was an avid collector of Steiff Teddy Bears, and many other antiques and collectibles. Alyce was an Artist who loved painting, pottery and jewelry making. She was also an avid fisherman and gardener and loved animals. She was a founding member of the Garden Club at West Hills and also of the Washburn Art Guild. Alyce married Joseph A. Smith at Holy Name Catholic Church on September 5, 1935. He preceded her in death on July 28, 1993. She was also predeceased by two brothers, Dennis Berridge and William "Bill" Berridge a sister Faigh Gardner and three nephews, Rick Gardner, Terry Gardner and Pete Perine. She is survived by nephews and nieces, Bradley Berridge and his wife Janis of Nickerson, KS, Penny Gitchell and Pam Misunas both of Nickerson, KS., and Denise Ziegler of Wichita, KS., Bob Smith of Overland Park, KS, Tom Smith of Topeka, KS, Ruth Lampton of Oklahoma City, OK, Dena Adams of Shawnee Mission, KS David Perine of Boulder, CO, and Judy Jesmer of Fairport, N.Y. Linda Hancock of Kansas City, MO, Maurita Fabrareau of Prairie Village, KS and several other great nieces and nephews. Private graveside services were held at Mount Hope Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to Helping Hands Humane Society and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
