Jean I. Zercher

Jean I. Zercher, 91, of Topeka, died July 4, 2011 at Lexington Park.

 

She was born in Topeka, Kansas on May 12, 1920 the daughter of Joseph and Irene (Logan) Becker.  When she was 4 years old her mother died and she was raised by her father and step-mother, Joseph and Daphne Hilda Becker.

 

Jean was a 1938 graduate of Capitol Catholic High School.  She attended Clark’s Business School.  Jean worked for the Federal Draft Board #52 in Kansas City, Missouri for seven years and for the Kansas Neurological Institute in Purchasing for 24 years, retiring in 1983. 

 

Jean was very active in the community where she was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society, and auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary.  She also was a pastoral care volunteer at St. Francis Hospital for several years.

 

She married Clinton C. Zercher Jr. in Wichita Falls, Texas on June 13, 1943.  He preceded her in death.  She was also preceded in death by a son, John J. Zercher, two sisters, Hazel Overbey and Josephine Meyer, two brothers, Charles and Joseph Becker and a great grandson, Christoper Michael Pinkston.  Jean is survived by a son Clinton C. Zercher III and wife Marlene, a sister, Dolly T. DeLong, a brother, Maurice B. Becker Sr., one granddaughter, Christine K. Pinkston, two great grandchildren, Jesse Zercher and his wife Carrie, and Earl Pinkston III along with three great great grandchildren, Diamond, James and Cheyenne Phillips.

 

Jean will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Wednesday after 2:00 p.m. where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 5:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church.  Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery. 

 

Memorial contributions may be made in her memory to St. Joseph Catholic Church and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas  66603.
