Kathryn Healy Wright

Kathryn Healy Wright, 89, of Topeka passed away May 27, 2011at Midland Hospice Care.

She was born February 23, 1922 in Lincoln County, KS the daughter of Daniel R. and Mary J. McQuillan Healy. 

Kathryn graduated from Lincoln High School in 1940.  Kathryn graduated from Halstead School of Nursing, Halstead, KS in 1943.  She later earned a BS degree in Nursing Education from Marymount College, Salina, KS.  After graduating from nursing school she worked for one year in the emergency room at the Kansas Ordnance Plant, Parsons, KS.  She then enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps where she served in the Philippine Islands (Manilla).  Kathryn earned the following medals and citations:  Meritorious Unit Badge, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Ribbon with a Bronze Battle Star, Philippines Liberation Medal with a Bronze Battle Star, one Overseas Service Bar and the Victory Medal.  She later served two years on active duty during the Korean War.  She worked for the V.A. Hospitals in Wadsworth and Wichita, KS and for the State of Kansas in Topeka. 

She served on the Kansas State Board of Nurses.  She was past chairman of

Kansas Occupational Nurses and past president of Topeka CPA Wives. She was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and the Women’s Club at the church.  Kathryn was also a member of Wegners Granulomatosis Support Group, St. Josephs Federated Alumni, Woman’s Club of Topeka,Women in Military Service, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.  

Kathryn married Donald F. Wright June 25, 1960 at St. Patrick’s Church in Lincoln, KS.  He survives her.  She is also survived by a son Patrick and his wife Brenda, a grandson, Adam, two step-granddaughters, April Beasley and Amy Barnes, a great grandson, Jacob Beasley and many nieces and nephews.  She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters Mary Agnes Healy and Joan Eckhart and two brothers, Vincent R. and Shelly Healy.

She will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Monday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 until 6:30 p.m. followed by a Parish Rosary at 6:30 p.m.   Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  Interment will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Philip Billard V.F.W. Post #1650.
