Antonio S. Florez of Topeka was born on June 13, 1925 the son of Francisco and Mercedes (Serna) Florez Sr. and passed away on March 31, 2011.
Dad was raised in Topeka Ks. in an area it’s residents proudly referred to as “Neutral” and where many of it’s residents were related. Dad’s mother passed away when he was 14 years old and his aunts helped his father in the upbringing of he and his brothers and sisters. These relationships were the source of Dad’s belief in the importance of family and its responsibilities.
Dad served in the United States Army and served during World War II. He was employed by the A.T. & S. F. Railway from where he retired on June 14, 1985 after 42 years of service.
Dad married Mary Ortiz on July 3, 1947. She preceded him in death on December 18, 1995. Brothers Valintin, Joe and Juan and sisters Socorro, Vicenta, preceded dad in death. His grandson Paul Florez preceded him in death on August 31, 2002. Survivors include his children John, Eleanor and husband Arthur, Tony, Evelyn, and Gary and wife Jackie. Dad also leaves 12 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. He is also survived by a brother Francisco (Emilia) Florez Jr. and two sisters, Guadalupe Batres and Dolores (Augustine) Gonzales.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M., Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 201 NE Chandler, Topeka, Kansas. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW. Visitation will be held at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home from 2 P.M to 9 P.M. on Tuesday April 5, 2011. Rosaries will be held by Augustinian & Recollect at 6 P.M. and a Parish vigil will be at 7 P.M. Memorial contributions may be made to the LULAC Senior Center.
