Ida Schäfer

September 7, 1919 — February 22, 2011

Ida Schäfer died Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at the Nursing Home in Marxzell, Germany.  Ida was born on September 7, 1919 in Etzenrot, Germany, the daughter of Johannes and Regine (Becker) Martin.

Ida lived through World War II in Germany and worked as a seamstress in a sewing factory.  She dearly loved to sew and this trade helped her take care of her family in post war Germany by bartering sewing and alteration jobs for groceries and other necessities.  She devoted her life to caring for her family and was loved and cared for by all who knew her.

Ida was a woman of faith and always volunteered for projects.  In her later years, when she wasn't able to sew any more, she continued to crochet and knit blankets that were sent to Third World countries.

Ida was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred Schäfer in 1972.  Ida is survived by her children, Hartmut Schäfer of Ettlingen, Germany and Mary (Fred) Jones of Kansas City, KS, two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A Rosary and Memorial Service was celebrated for Ida in Germany on March 1, 2011, followed by cremation.

Graveside services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 16, 2011 in the Mausoleum at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, 701 N. 94th St. in Kansas City, Kansas.  Her ashes will be inurned near her daughter's home.
