Elmer J. “Al” Hahn, 87, of Topeka, passed away on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital.
He was born on June 15, 1923 in Buffalo, New York, the son of Elmer and Clara (Albrecht) Hahn. After high school Al enlisted in the Army Air Corps and served during World War II. He resided in Topeka most of his life.
Al was employed as a Service Technician for Sears and Roebuck for 35 years.
He was a member of St. Matthew Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus Council #534, and the First Santa Fe Trail Plainsmen Gun Club. Al volunteered at the V.A. Hospital for 24 years, taught junior high Religious Education at the church, and taught at Kaw Valley Technical School. Al enjoyed teaching as it gave him the opportunity to help people achieve their goals.
He married Marie Tarwater in Topeka on January 12, 1957. She preceded him in death on April 1, 2000. Al married Barbara Ingenthron on January 4, 2002, she survives. He is also survived by three sons, Michael Johnson (Dora) of Berryton, David Hahn (Lisa) of Berryton, Mark Hahn (Susan) of Meriden; three daughters, Theresa Lein (Scott) of Topeka, Susan Kraus (Daniel) of Paxico, Patricia Sleizer (Todd) of Sacramento, CA.; a sister, Catherine Hahn of Topeka; ten grandchildren and one great grandson.
Al will lie in state at St. Matthew Catholic Church on Wednesday after 4:00 p.m. where a Vigil Prayer Service with rosary will be at 6:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Matthew Church. Cremation will follow.
