John Howard Morris

November 22, 1944 — September 11, 2010

John Howard Morris, 65, of Topeka, died September 11, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital.

 

He was born in Mobile, Alabama on November 22, 1944 the son of Joseph Henry and Alfreda (Jensen) Morris.

 

John served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War as a Helicopter Mechanic.

He graduated from Admiral Farragut Military Academy and attended the Citadel.  John was recommended by State Senator Sam Peterson to the U.S. Naval Academy which he attended for a year.

 

He worked as a pilot for the WWBA Eye In The Sky Radio Station in Florida and had been a truck driver for Southland Frozen Foods and Cargill Trucking.  He had his pilot’s license and loved to fly.

 

He was most proud of his work as a Graphic Artist in the Printing Industry.  He was voted the fourth best printer in the United States through a competition with VICA.

John loved to play golf and poker, collecting model railroad cars, watching old western and war movies and especially spending time with his two granddaughters.

 

He was co-owner for the Home Shopper Magazine and of Friar Tuck Printing.

 

John married Shirley Baldwin on December 24, 1969.  She survives him of the home.  He is also survived by three sons, John Joseph Morris of Tampa, Florida, Mark D. Morris and his fiancé Melissa of Topeka and Jason Morris of Topeka, and his two granddaughters, Kathryn Marie Morris and Amelia Valen Hawley-Morris both of Topeka and his extended family in Florida.  He was preceded in death by his brother Donald Morris. 

 

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, September 25th at 10:30 a.m. at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.  Inurnment will take place at a later date.
