Joe G. Ybarra, 88 of Topeka, passed away July 16, 2010 at St. Francis Health Center surrounded by his loving family. He is at peace with his heavenly father.
He was born September 25, 1921 in Sweetwater, TX the son of Vincente and Gumesinda (Garcia) Ybarra. Joe served in the United States Army during WW II serving in the Asiatic Pacific Campaign and European-African Mideast.
Joe was employed as carman for the AT & SF Railroad in Emporia before being transferred to Topeka in 1951.
He had many special interests including fishing, playing cards, gardening, watching wrestling and listening to Mexican music. Most of all he enjoyed being involved with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Joe was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the Over 55 Club at Assumption Catholic Church.
He was married to Caroline Garcia on January 17, 1944 in Emporia. She preceded him in death on July 5, 2001. He was also preceded in death by a grandson Jason W. Barnhart (Ybarra) in 1994, a granddaughter Gabriella Boyer in 1999 and a brother John Ybarra in 2003.
He is survived by two sons, Joe David (Connie) Ybarra of Maple Hill and Robert J. “Bob” (Nancy) of Topeka and a daughter Elizabeth A. Ybarra of Topeka. Seven grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren also survive.
oe will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Burial with military honors will follow at Mount Calvary Cemetery.
