Thomas James Marney

Thomas James Marney, 81, of Tecumseh, passed away April 1, 2010 at Hickory Pointe Care and Rehabilitation Center in Oskaloosa.

He was born December 30, 1928 in Willard the son of George Franklin and Mary Julia (Costello) Marney.  Thomas attended Willard Elementary School and was a graduate of Rossville High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Thomas was employed at Goodyear Tire & Rubber from 1953 until he retired in 1991.  In retirement he had many interests and hobbies including his children and grand children’s activities, gardening, watching television sports especially KU basketball and football, RV camping, fishing and traveling.

He was a member of United Rubber Workers Local #307, Capitol Post # 1 of the American Legion, Moose Lodge #555 and National Hikers and Campers Association.

Thomas was married to Charlene R. Kunard on July 20, 1957 at Assumption Catholic Church.  She survives.

Other survivors include, a daughter Cindy (Neil) Hix of Tecumseh, a son Ron (Carolyn) Marney of Shawnee, a sister Mary C. Browne of Topeka, four grandchildren, Bethany and Evan Hix and Logan & Alexa Marney.  Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.  He was preceded in death by a brother Charles “Pat” Marney, half-brothers George, Veryl, and Howard Marney who was killed at Iwa Jima during WW II while serving with the United States Marines and a half-sister Velma Lloyd.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30  p.m. Monday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home with a funeral service to follow at 1:30 p.m.  Interment with military honors will follow at Pleasant Hill Cemetery at 85th & Ratner Road.

Memorial contributions may be made to Topeka Alzheimer’s Assn. or the Helping Hands Humane Society or the and sent in care of the funeral home, 800 SW 6th Ave, Topeka, 66603.
