John S. Appelhanz

October 31, 1955 — January 21, 2010

John Scott Appelhanz, 54, formerly of Topeka, died January 21, 2010 at Stonybrook Retirement Center in Manhattan, Kansas.

He was born in Topeka, Kansas on October 31, 1955 the son of Isadore “Ike” and Patricia (Evans) Appelhanz. 

John attended Texas Technical Institute in the early 90’s with an Architectural Drafting Certificate. 

He worked in concrete construction in Texas for most of his life.  John enjoyed fishing.

John was very proud of his daughter Elaine which he called his darling.  He enjoyed watching his son Erik who participated in Special Olympics.  He was also proud of John Jr. who was the state champion in BMXing, took 2nd out of 300 in skateboarding, and 1st in state in motorcross.  John Jr. is now involved in wrestling like his father who was on the wrestling team at Hayden High School.

He married Carol Young and they were later divorced.  He married Aline Ormand in Topeka, Kansas on August 11, 1995, she survives.  He is also survived by a daughter Elaine Appelhanz of Topeka, sons, John Scott Appelhanz Jr. of Manhattan, and Erik Snow of Topeka, his father and step mother, Ike and Sara Appelhanz of Topeka, four brothers, Fred, Roderick, Michael and Daniel Appelhanz, three sisters, Christine Finn, Janet Shaw, and Amy Tompkins and a half sister, Elizabeth Ann Dewitt.

John will lie in state at Christ the King Catholic Church on Monday after 4:00 p.m. where a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Christ the King Catholic Church.  Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
