Robert Lee “Bob” Gardner, 78, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at his home.
e was born August 5, 1931 the son of Marvin E. and Beulah (Carlisle) Gardner. Bob was raised in Topeka and graduated from Topeka High School in 1949 where he was the captain of the Trojan basketball team.
Bob was employed by Stauffer Publications for forty-four years before he retired in July of 1993.
His hobbies included fishing, hunting, playing golf and watching sports which he enjoyed doing with his family. Bob’s family was the most important part of his life.
Bob was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley Mae Stone, whom he married on February 14, 1951 in Topeka. Other survivors include a son, Dan Gardner and wife Carol, Topeka, two daughters, Glenda Leftwich and husband Don, Topeka and Karen Phillips and husband Rick, Berryton. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren, a brother Marvin D. Gardner and wife Irene and a sister Janice A. Fields and husband Terry, sister-in-law, Vina Gardner Leeth and husband Larry and many beloved nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dennis C. Gardner, and niece Mandy R. Gardner.
Mr. Gardner will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. today where the family will receive friends. The funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Fellowship Bible Church, 6800 SW 10th, Topeka. Interment will follow in Topeka Cemetery.
