Refugia Cookie Torrez

Refugia “Cookie or Cuca” Torrez, 81, of Topeka, died September 28, 2009 at the Midland Hospice House.

She was born on August 4, 1928 in Kansas City, Kansas the daughter of Elijio and Romalda (Perez) Oliva.

Refugia was a homemaker and had been a day care provider.  She was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and the Altar Society at the church.  Her volunteer work included Meals on Wheels and the Fiesta Mexicana.

She married Cirilo Torrez in Kansas City, Kansas on November 26, 1955.  He preceded her in death on August 27, 2009.    Refugia is survived by a brother-in-law, Louie Torrez, many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and godchildren.

She will lie in state at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Wednesday after 4:00 p.m. where an Altar Society Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. followed by a Parish Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church.  Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
