Raymond D. “Ray” Johnson, 78, of Topeka, died September 16, 2009 at Manor Care Health Services.
He was born on July 14, 1931 in Topeka, Kansas the son of Harry and Ebba (Bolstrom) Johnson.
Ray worked for the Shawnee County Refuse Department for 35 years, retiring in 1992.
He was an athlete and loved to play American Legion Ball, Fast Pitch and Slow Pitch Softball and was an active player until this past year. He also played basketball and enjoyed bowling. His major love in sports was baseball and at one time he tried out for the St. Louis Cardinals,
Ray was a member of the Moose Lodge #555.
He married Marjorie L. Fritton in Topeka, on August 2, 1954. She survives of the home. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Ray was preceded in death by a brother, Ralph Johnson and two sisters, Margaret Price and Kathryn Bicknell.
Ray will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Friday after 2:00 p.m. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday from 9-10 a.m. followed by the funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
