John D. Cook

November 3, 1923 — July 15, 2009

John D. Cook age 85, of Topeka, passed away Wednesday, July 15, 2009 at St. Francis Health Center.

 

He was born November 3, 1923 in Oregon, MO the son of Lester S. and Lucille L. (Grimes) Cook.  He served in the United States Navy during WW II.

 

John was a detective lieutenant for the Topeka Police Department before he retired in 1982.

 

He enjoyed numerous activities including boating, water skiing, golf and taking judo and karate classes.  John taught judo at the YMCA and water skiing.  He also had a private pilot’s license.

 

John was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church and FOP Lodge #3.

 

John married Wilma Lauer on June 19, 1948 in Frankfort, Kansas, they were divorced on September 11, 1969.  He was married to Nita M. Hesse on December 13, 1973 in Topeka.  She preceded him in death on September 11, 2001.

 

Survivors include a son Kenneth Mark Cook of Lansing and Sandra S. Cook of Topeka.

 

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday at Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home.  Inurnment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW.

 

Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.
