Steve L. Bowers, Sr., 49, of Topeka, passed away Sunday, July 5, 2009 at Stormont-Vail Health Care Emergency Room surrounded by his family and friends. .
He was born February 22, 1960 in Topeka the son of Paul L. and Delores R. (Mendoza) Bowers. He graduated in 1978 from Topeka High School.
Steve was a journeyman in mechanical engineering at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
He enjoyed dirt racing with his sons and they built all of their own race cars. Steve has been racing since the late 1980’s and had many loyal fans. He also enjoyed hunting, drawing, fishing, and being with family and friends. Steve will be remembered for his smile and for always helping others.
Steve was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and the United Steel Workers Union Local # 307.
He was married to Vicky S. Silversmith on January 11, 1980 in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include; his parents Paul and Delores Bowers of Topeka, two sons, Steven Bowers, Jr. of Topeka and Bryan Bowers of the home, one brother Michael Bowers and his wife Nita of Topeka, two sisters, Susanna F. Oliva and her husband Julian Oliva, Jr. and Linda M. Lucero and her husband David of Topeka. Numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.
Steve will lie in state after 4:00 p.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church where the Nate Morales Council #1177 of the Knights of Columbus rosary will be prayed at 6:30 p.m. followed by a vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Steve Bowers, Sr. Memorial Fund to benefit the racing industry and sent in care of the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, KS 66603.
