William H. “Bill” Gardner, 73, of Topeka, died May 11, 2009 at St. Francis E.R.
He was born in Kansas City, Missouri on September 6, 1935 the son of Charles Edward and Mary Helen (Harter) Gardner.
Bill was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. He received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Psychology from Washburn University. Bill was retired from the Menninger Foundation where he had been a Medical Technician for many years.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and hunting for arrowheads and other Indian artifacts. He was a member of Highland Heights Christian Church.
Bill married Carol A. Staton in Kansas City, Missouri on October 27, 1962. They later divorced. He is survived by a son, Guy Gardner and wife Jackie of Berryton, three daughters, Stacy Reiber of Iowa, Lori Gardner-Wingfield and husband Scott of Lecompton, and Jennifer “J.J.” Matzek and husband Jeff of Topeka. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and was preceded in death by one grandson, Drew Threadgill on October 13, 1993.
Mr. Gardner will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Thursday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral Services will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Highland Heights Christian Church with Dr. David Myers officiating.
Interment will follow in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Berryton with military honors provided by the U.S. Navy.
