John Schiffelbein

November 3, 1937 — January 6, 2009

John Schiffelbein, 71, of Topeka, passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at Midland Hospice House.

He was born November 3, 1937 in Topeka the son of John G. and Barbara (Puhl) Schiffelbein.  John was a 1958 graduate of Hayden High School.  He later served in the United States Army. 

John was a carman welder at AT & SF Railroad for thirty-eight years before he retired February 15, 1998.

He was a carpenter who built his own home and enjoyed making furniture..

John was a member of Mater Dei Parish and Transportation Communications Union.

He was married to June Meyer on September 15, 1962 at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church.  She survives.

Other survivors include; one daughter, Stephanie Haberkorn (Jon C.) of Topeka, two sons, Gregg Schiffelbein (Susan) of Baldwin City and Jeff Schiffelbein (April) of Kansas City, KS, eleven grandchildren, Daniel, Kelsey, Nathan, Gregory, Morgan, Jason, Joelle, Alaina, Nicholas, Laci and Madison.  Two brothers, Charles Schiffelbein (Bobbie) and James Schiffelbein all of Topeka, and three sisters, Barbara Seibert (John) of Topeka, Margaret Keehn (Ed) of Solider and Lucy Franks of Wichita also survive.  He was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Trevor Paul Haberkorn and Samantha Spring Schiffelbein, three sisters, Cynthia, Vera, and Rita and one brother Mike.

John will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. followed by a parish rosary at 7:30 p.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday at Mater Dei’s Holy Name Church.  Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery with military honors provided by Philip Billard Post #1650 of the VFW.

Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice House or the American Heart Association sent in care of the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave, Topeka, 66603.
