Adan “Adam” Almaraz, Sr., 76 of Topeka, passed away Friday, November 28, 2008 at Topeka Community Health Care Center with his devoted loving wife at his side.
He was born September 9, 1932 in San Diago, TX the son of Alejo P. Almaraz, Sr. and Guadalupe (Ibanez) Almaraz. Adam lived in Topeka since 1967 moving here from Alice, TX.
Adam worked in construction including Herrman’s Excavating before he retired in 1988 because of health.
Mr. Almaraz was a steady member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1979. His physical efforts preformed, beatified an area and “Adam” received a plaque from Group #1 – dedicated July 4, 1999 for members in the fellowship is known as “Adam’s Park”.
Adam was a member of Mater Dei Parish’s Holy Name Church for many years.
He was married to Rita L. Unterberger-Umscheid on September 7, 1985 in Topeka. She survives.
Other survivors include; three sons, Adan Almaraz, Jr. of Topeka, Alfredo “Fabian” Almaraz of Topeka and Miguel, “Michael” Antonio Almaraz of Edgewood, NM, two daughters, Eva Tinajero and Belen Rivera both of Topeka, a step-son, David E. Umscheid of Eudora and two sisters, Lucilla Vela of Alice, TX and Maria Guadalupe “Mary Lou” Zapata of Corpus Christi, TX and eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. An ex-wife, Lucy Estrada of Topeka also survives.
Adam will lie in state after 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. A prayer service will be at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday at Mater Dei’s Holy Name Church. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
