Bernard L. “Bernie” Kaeberle, 78, of Topeka, died November 20, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.
He was born in Topeka, Kansas on February 17, 1930 the son of John and Rose G. (Marks) Kaeberle. Bernie graduated from Hayden in 1949 and from Washburn University in 1954.
Bernie was a veteran of the United States Air Force where he was a pilot and served from 1955 to 1957 during the Korean Conflict.
He retired on March 18, 1995 from the Shawnee County Youth Center where he worked in Food Service Personnel. He had previously managed various private clubs including the Knights of Columbus Hall and Cedar Crest Country Club.
Bernie was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church where he participated in the Perpetual Adoration, as a Eucharistic Minister and in the Ministry of Care. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus Council #534, Sisters of Charity in Leavenworth Associate and several card clubs. He was the basketball coach for the Catholic Youth League at St. Joseph School.
He married Marlene M. Oberst at St. Matthew Catholic church in Topeka on February 7, 1970, who survives of the home. They have one daughter, Jean Marie Kaeberle of Lawrence. He is also survived by a brother, Herbert J. Kaeberle of Olathe, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.
Bernie will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Sunday after 2:00 p.m. where the sisters and associates of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth will have a Prayer Service at 5:00 p.m. and a parish rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church or the Marian Clinic and sent in care of Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home, 800 SW 6th Ave., Topeka, Kansas 66603.
