Joann Alvis, 75, of Topeka, died November 15, 2008 at St. Francis Hospital.
She was born in Topeka, Kansas on October 26, 1933 the daughter of George and Arlinna “Peg” (Probasco) Fleischer.
Joann attended Washburn University and worked as a legal secretary for Gene Hiatt for 15 years before she retired.
She enjoyed doing cross-stitch, loved animals, and reading. She had done extensive traveling and especially enjoyed the southwest.
Joann was a member of Most Pure Heart of Mary where she was also in the choir. She was also a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, the Red Hat Society and was an honorary Ambassador at Atria.
She married Charles William “Bill” Alvis in Topeka, Kansas on May 21, 1955. He preceded her in death on April 9, 2003. Survivors include her two sons, Jerry Dean Alvis and Bruce Daniel Alvis both of Topeka and one granddaughter, Serenity Danielle Alvis-Hibbs who is serving in the Army National Guard stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
Joann will lie in state at the Brennan-Mathena Funeral Home on Friday after 2:00 p.m. where the family will receive friends from 6-7 p.m. and a Parish Rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at Most Pure Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
